Active Me - Kia Tū Frequently Asked Questions

What is Active Me - Kia Tū for?

Variety and Sport NZ are helping Kiwi kids get involved in play, activities and sports - so they can participate in the things they love to do.

Through Active Me, children and young people on Variety’s Kiwi Kid Sponsorship Programme in Auckland and Northland can access up to $300 each year for two years to help them get active and moving.

Active Me is a two year pilot programme in Auckland and Northland only.

Who can access Active Me - Kia Tū?

Any child or young person aged 4-18 years old on Kiwi Kid Sponsorship currently living in Auckland or Northland.

Why is the funding only for Northland and Auckland children?

Active Me is a two-year pilot programme delivered with the support of Sport New Zealand. We will evaluate the programme to measure its benefit for children, young people and their whānau. This will help us work out if we can extend the programme across New Zealand in the future

How much funding is available each year?

Up to $300. Every child in Auckland or Northland who is sponsored through the Kiwi Kid Sponsorship has up to $300 per year available for two years (in 2021 and 2022), which can be accessed through Variety in the same way as Kiwi Kid Sponsorship funds are.

What types of activity can I use the funding for?

This fund can be used in different ways to help your child or young person be more active. Kids can be physically active through sports, after-school clubs or groups, or playing with friends. Some examples include swimming, running, cycling, dancing, kapa haka, football, netball, basketball, tennis, hockey, athletics, yoga, martial arts, skate boarding, and going to the gym.

Active Me can help you pay for sports equipment, new gear, registration fees, appropriate clothing, shoes or uniforms, or other activity costs – so long as it supports your child to be active in the ways they want to be.

How do I access the funding?

You can access Active Me funding in the same way that you access your Kiwi Kid Sponsorship funding. There are three easy ways:

1. Ask your School Champion to submit a claim to Variety via our portal.

2. Email us an invoice at kiwikids@variety.org.nz with the subject Active Me (for no more than $300) and we will pay the invoice directly to the provider.

3. Email us at kiwikids@variety.org.nz to request a Warehouse Purchase Order with the subject Active Me and the $ value (for no more than $300).

Invoices take approximately two to four weeks to be paid and once paid by Variety, you will be able to collect your goods/items.

If my child’s swim lessons cost more than $300, can I claim $300 from Active Me - Kia Tū and the difference from the KKS fund?

Yes, so long as the difference is no more than the funding available to you on KKS.

Do I have to spend all the funding at once?

No, you can make as many claims as you want, and you have 12 months to spend the $300 for your child/children. Each child in your care will have access to $300.

Is the Active Me - Kia Tū funding a one-off or can I get it again?

At this time, Variety can offer this grant for two years to children in Kiwi Kid Sponsorship in Auckland and Northland. This means children and young people will have access to a $300 in 2021 and another $300 in 2022.

Can I advance the use of the full two-year amount of $600 or an amount more than $300 in the first year?

No, the funding for the second year cannot be advanced for use in the first year.

Can any unused amount be carried over to the next year?

No, unfortunately it has to be used within 12 months.

Can I make a claim from both Active Me and KKS for separate sports activities in the same year?

Yes, you can, so long as there is sufficient funding in your child’s Active Me and KKS fund

Will I forfeit my funding if I move out of Auckland or Northland to another region where Active Me - Kia Tū is not provided?

No, any unused funds will be available until your Active Me grant expires in February 2022.
