Variety – the Children’s Charity has today opened the 2019 applications for its Gold Heart Scholarship programme.
Offering funding of up to $5,000 for New Zealand children and youth aged up to 18, Gold Heart Scholarships are awarded to those with an exceptional talent in their chosen field, who are disadvantaged financially or living with an illness or disability.
The funding is available to those who excel in the arts, sports or education.
2018 Gold Heart Scholar and aspiring Black Fern, Lovely Pulotu, says she feels ‘so blessed’ to have received the scholarship.
Playing for two Auckland club rugby teams and her school team, as well as refereeing, there are many financial commitments required to ensure Lovely can continue to pursue her dream of taking up rugby professionally.
“There’s a lot of different gear that comes with this sport that I need and mum and dad can’t always pay for that, so it really does help.”
This includes covering the cost of petrol to and from her numerous training sessions and games as well as funding adequate shoes and sportswear to train in and numerous uniforms.
Applications for the 2019 round of funding are open through until Friday 29 March.
